Hillsboro, OH Rocky Fork Aug 31, 2009

Thunder in the Hills was a great weekend. The mornings were cool and sunny by noon the temps warmed up in the 70's and into the evening. The boat count was a modest 44. The larger classes were of course the 2.5 stocks and 5 litre's. The 5L's had 11 boats while the NM's had only 3... not enough to for a legal heat - so, we ran our 5L as a National Mod. Changes made for this race was engine relocation. I moved it back two inches. It made a difference in how the boat rode on the water but she still seems under-horsepower/rpm. Course rules were to establish lanes at a minute fifteen on the front stretch start/finish line. This caused numerous problems in multiple classes. Many would jump or would not establish lanes causing one minute penalties.
Overall the weekend was fun and we enjoyed the help from little "scooter".

Alum Creek 2009 Thunder in the Creek race exhibition

Alum Creek State Park, located in Delaware, OH (just north of Columbus) - is a man-made reservoir with a 3,000 ft beach. The area is perfect for spectators to view any size course or boats. The 2009 Thunder on the Creek event occurred on Sept 19th. It was a one-day race exhibition approved by the APBA. The event hosted around 35 Inboard and Vintage hydroplanes on a 1.25 mile course. The locals were very supportive and organizers are already planning for next years inboard race event. Special thanks goes to all who helped bring this together... Mike Hicks, Mark Weber, Tony Black, Ron Synder, Stephen Spisak, Billy Noonan, Kevin Klosterman, Matt O'Quinn, the rescue personel, volunteers, Quaker Steak & Lube, and the Saturday afternoon caterers. www.thunderonthecreek.com

Waterford, MI 2009 Quake on the Lake - Eastern Divisionals

What a great time seeing our extended boating family. The race organizers and race committee really done well to put on a smooth event. Mother Nature caused some delays. I believe I saw the local news stating it was the second coldest July on record. As far a racing goes, they tried a 1 minute 15 second pin on the front stretch... I like it... some don't. As far as the 5L is concerned... it is of no concern any more. Let it turn Vintage - it'll make an owner really proud to show her off everywhere!! We just weren't competitive - whether it was the motor, prop, or boat... who's to say... I'm just glad to be home to rest. The Rainbow Connection is sending little 4-yr old Alyssa to Disney to be a Princess... I wish her the best!!

Walled Lake, MI

The 2nd Annual Walled Lake Thunder Regatta was a great race weekend! With mother-nature making her presence from time to time the overall weather was great!  I have the sunburn to prove it!

For 2009 ~ I have merged teams with Mike Cashin & Dean Armstrong. Together we'll be running the older 5 litre Heddon hull till the new boat is built.
Walled Lake was our first race of the season.  Heat 1 - was short lived.  With 1-1/2 laps remaining in the race, we broke a chain coupler that connects the motor to the prop shaft.  Because of the rare shaft size, we weren't able to replace the broken parts.  Many thanks to the Teams that offered their time and spare parts.  Mike Bruns had a spare master chain link we used on that heat.  Jim Wilson tried desperately to machine some parts on the Bridgeport.  Unfortunately, a part was damaged in the process.  For the organizers... Jim Seckler, Todd McQuin, and Bayside Sports Grill, and of-course APBA race staff and sponsors... Thanks!

Hillsboro, OH Rocky Fork

Many racers have asked, "How's the new boat?"  Well... my response is slow and before I say anything I'm reminded by them that:

  • She floats
  • She starts
  • She begins every race
  • She completes every race
  • She doesn't need towed in

All of which is a good start.  But, I'm expecting a bit more.  It'll take some time to figure out some of these issues.  Till then, we'll keep on doing what were doing and make tiny improvements one at a time.  Thanks for everybody's help and advice.  We find our racing community the best there is and hope to see everyone soon.

Celina, OH - New Boat Debut...

CIMG3164CIMG3188
After some consideration on whether it can be done - I tore into the new purchase having only 2 weeks before the Summer Nationals in Celina, OH.  Per APBA rules - we followed the "hull replacement" ruling by subtituting boats and keeping the S-93 Hot Shot name.  Arriving on Friday with hopes to test... Mother Nature had a different agenda.  We settled for a Sat morning testing 1/2 an hour before heat 2 of the 2.5 stocks.  We were able to obtain (2) 4th place finishes in our qualifying heats against the (16) 2.5's that registered to race. Making a risky move we made an adjustment that quickly proved to be in the wrong direction.  We pulled a 9th place finish in the Final.  Although the move cost us valuable points and money... the information obtained was needed.  We'll make further adjustments for our Rocky Fork - Thunder in the Hills race.

Bought another 2.5 stock boat...

Team Hot Shot is proud to announce that we've acquired another boat.  It's a '91 Auld - 2.5 ltr stock hydroplane.  The hull is made from the lighter composite materials which should make us more competitive for future seasons.  There's a lot of work that will be required before hitting the water... currently the boat is yellow/black and known as the S-5 Startrooper.  It has performed at the Evansville Freedom Festival the past two years.  Plans for the boat will be extensive!  Keep an eye out later this year and early next season for our new boat unveiling.

See you at the races!

2008 Evansville Freedom Festival - Thunder on the Ohio - 30th Anniversary

As a 2.5 stock, it's a wonderful opportunity to race at Evansville with the Unlimiteds.  It's a total treat to have this race located at your backdoor!  Participation from the 2.5's this year were down from last with five hydro's competing: (numerical order)
  • S-2    Superior Miss     Dennis Wright of New Harmony, IN
  • S-5    Star Trooper      Myron Jackson of Vevay, IN
  • S-57  Fang Racing       Steve Bering of Huron, OH
  • S-58  Challenger         Terry Amanti of Schaumburg, IL
  • S-93  Hot Shot            Tom Bergman of Evansville, IN

We thank all the people responsible for this event - Freedom Festival Committee, Staff, Sponsors, Rescue Personnel, Volunteers, and Law Enforcement.

No. I didn't flip or barrel roll.   Things were looking well for Team Hot Shot toward the final heat!  Water and weather conditions kept changing on the course.  As I began my last lap with a straight away lead and approaching corner number one I noticed how much the conditions have changed since prior laps.  I backed off the throttle and kept a tight turn to keep lane position.  The front right sponson dropped into a hole (or the lowest part of a wave) causing the boat to spin around from the momentum.  As the rear of the boat made contact with the water the rudder bracket suffered damage.  In these events, it's best to have this part break rather than ripping out the transom area (or back of the boat).  We'll get the boat up and running soon...  Thanks to all with concerns!  I'm okay... just raised my blood pressure a bit, lol. (wink)

Photo's will be posted shortly.

Hydroplane Boat For Sale

T, Y, S class Hydroplane Hull w/trailer - For Sale! - "run as Vintage with minor changes"

Due to the new motor program... this boat will be sold as hull and trailer only.  Or, if preferred, a different motor will be provided so it can be turn key ready.  Please specify your intensions...  I would like to see the next owner preserve the history and integrity of the boat as we and others have done.

History:

1st owner - Don Cameron - Built in the early 80's by Jim Hansen and designed by Jim Lucero - known as the S-74 Island Girl - 2000cc motor/S-class

2nd owner - Henry (Hank) Kosciuszko - S-32 Bad Habit - yellow/gold - 2000cc motor/S-class - had Balcer install shoes - Jimmy King driver

3rd owner - Jim Miller - 2300cc motor/S-class

4th owner - Kevin and Beth Gilday - 2300cc motor/SY-class - S-41 You Go Girl Racing - Beth barrel rolled the boat once at Celina, OH

5th owner - Trafficade Services - Dennis Johnson - 2300cc/S-class - S-93 Knot Rod - driven by Elizabeth Wolfe - before the 2300 was installed David Archiable set the boat up in the "Y" class/1 ltr modified using a Yamaha motor and a gear box - boat was very light in the front - balance was an issue - idea terminated

6th owner - HDS - Tom Bergman - 2300/S-class - S-93 Hot Shot - 3rd year we ran our most powerful 2300 with minimal boat setup making it run the fastest in it's history - end of 1st year we began acquiring 1 ltr mod parts but did not attempt install due to 2300 progress.

Call or email anytime,

Thanks!  Tom

Madison, Indiana 2007 Governor's Cup Regatta

hmmm... arrived Thursday evening some scattered showers around Scottsburg and Madison.
Entered pits on Friday morning.  Tested around 10 am.  Began 2.5 stock racing around 1 pm.  Heat 1 was won by the S-93, 2nd was S-2, 3rd was S-96; heat 2 was won by S-2, 2nd was S-96, 3rd was S-93.  (As of this time: S-2 leads Madison by 75 pts with the S-93 in 2nd and the S-96 with 3rd.  Overall, the S-93 is leading in points in this mini-series event between Evansville and Madison.)
Saturday - racing was a bust due to high amounts of debris from Thursday rain... took a ride in the rescue boat and seen limbs as long as 12 feet floating along the river.  The biggest problem was it wasn't floating away very fast.  Some of it just floated around in clusters.

Thunder On The Ohio - Freedom Festival

 Woohoo!!
Alas, we're racing in Evansville!  Visit 424help.com to view the Freedom Festival Patriot Street Cams...  More photos will follow... 48 pics taken on Friday.
Okay, I think I added 115 more photos for Friday.  I was simply too busy so I didn't take many of these pics.  It was a great day.  Had some problems with the starter gear but got everything worked out.  See you Saturday for testing and heat 1.

Saturday - added 124 pics - very hot sunny day! Tested for about 20 minutes.  Heat 1 began at 3:55pm... one boat, S-57 Fang Racing had burnt a solenoid wire preventing them to run.  Eric Pomber Jr, rookie, was at the back of the pack learning the ropes (Great Job!!)  Dennis Wright S-2 Superior Miss took 2nd place and I took first.

Sunday - 97 pics added!  3 Wild consecutive Unlimited heats with blowovers in same location.  I continued to have starter issues which kept us from putting on the cowling for the final - the air/fuel mixture was disrupted and kept us from reaching top speed.  Better luck in Madison... watch out Wayne!!!

For the Sunday Finals... Congrats goes to 1st place: S-96 Wayne Dunlap, 2nd place: S-93 Tom Bergman, 3rd place: S-117 Eric Pomber Jr., 4th place: S-2 Dennis Wright.

The point standings will carry over to Madison, Indiana and the high point winner will be announced directly after the Final.

Morgan City, LA 2007 Eastern Divisionals Atchafalaya Regatta

Stony Creek Sept. 24, 2006 Streak On The Creek!

Okay, I decided today... Rocky Fork won't be my last race of the year... Stony Creek will be.  On account this is it's first year and we need to have a successful turnout.  So, c'mon!  Let's go to Michigan and race!

Tues. 12:30pm.  Sorry for the delayed post!  We got lost coming home.
Now, if only mother nature had cooperated... this race site location has so much to offer.
We began our journey early Saturday morning.  It was windy and pooring rain!  Not until north of Louisville did the rain subside and become a drizzle.  Sunday morning we woke up to sun!  Then it quickly disappeared the closer we got to the park.  For the most part Sunday was cloudy, drizzly, windy, and cold.  We had a wind advisory which delayed the action till 1-2 pm.  The 2.5 stock class didn't run till 3:30 or so.  We were able to run our final around 5-5:30.  Of the 7 "S-Class" boats, I got 4th.  Congrats goes to 1st- Mike Monahan, 2nd- Doug Martin, 3rd- Mark Manos!
Huge thanks to the Park Admin., the Elk's Club, Marine Prop Riders, APBA Officials, and the Rescue/Fire Teams!
No, we didn't get lost on the way home.  It was a leisurely Sunday drive home that overlapped into Monday.  We stopped at a hotel... sat in a jacuzzi (thinking of everyone driving home of-course), then toured downtown Dayton and Cincinnati on Monday.

Posted... 144 pictures!   Note: Every boat is shown!!!

Rocky Fork 2006 Hillsboro, OH Thunder In The Hills

I had a blast!  This was my last race of the season and it was a memorable weekend.  By far one of my favorite race courses - fast and smooth.  A huge thanks goes to all the very nice folks that gave advice and help me throughout the weekend...   Eli and Dean come to mind first.
I had the opportunity to drive a 5 litre this weekend.  Wow!  The E-888 Team, what a great group of guys!  Mike, Pete, Neil, and Jacob.  They made my weekend!  I had so much fun driving that boat!  So much faster than my 2.5 ltr stock!
And Dean, I'll definately take you up on that offer next year!

Enjoy the pics!  See You Next Year!

Celina, Ohio

Ahhh, Celina... My head is still throbbing with pain!!!  And, it's not because of the Pit Party!  This was my first year at Celina so I didn't know what to expect.  Decisions, decisions... setup in the back forty or setup near the cranes.  It wasn't too difficult to decide on account there was only two of us.  Turns out, so many people were nice to help.  HUGE THANKS to EVERYBODY!!!  Especially Rachel; this young woman helped out by keeping control of the boat while it was in the water and not to forget these guys... Team MPM Racing & Wright Bros Racing; they made sure I was buckled in tight before every race heat.   Thank  you Mark Manos and Dennis Wright  for allowing me to test your spare props.  All-in-all, the weekend was a blast and every minute of seat time only makes me better and more experienced.  Hope to see everybody soon!  And, I'll see you next year Celina!!!

I'd like to thank the people that helped me during and before each race heat.  Your help was invaluable!!!  I'd also like to thank the ones that gave advice on motor repair to race strategies.  Your experience is appreciated and I'm grateful.

Madison, IN

Well, Madison was a bust. Even though the weather was perfect... Mother Nature just couldn't cooperate days prior. She gave us plenty of rain in the northern states causing high water and debris in the mighty Ohio River below. Eventually the Unlimited's were able to put on a show for the paying patrons. One was damaged due to floating debris, another lost a prop causing exstensive damage, there was a fire on the U-3, and Oh Boy! Oberto spun out at top speed missing a patrol boat. The Vintage class pulled themselves before attending the race. And, the "S" class were discussing "not to race" when word from the top decided for us. Did I mention the weather was great?

Our prayers goes to the individuals harmed in the terrible car accident that Sunday evening.

A thorough collection of hydro pics!
